Paula Duncan was named the 2027 Region 1 Teacher of the Year on April 7th, 2026. Mrs. Duncan teaches history and social sciences here at Powhatan High School. “Mrs. Duncan’s impact on Powhatan High School is both profound and far-reaching, built over three decades of exceptional teaching, leadership, and service.” (Powhatan High School Principal, Mr. Michael Pierce). Mrs. Duncan has been teaching here at PHS for about 25 years. She is truly a responsible and respectful woman, the way she teaches history, helps students learn and comprehend the material well. “Her ability to connect history to students’ lives while challenging them to think critically about the world around them, reflects the very best of the teaching profession.” (Superintendent of Public Instruction, Jenna Conway) Mrs. Duncan will represent Region 1, Central VA, in the Statewide Virginia Teacher of the Year selection process.
