Veterans day was earlier this month and with it there was time to honor and to commemorate the Veterans that have put their lives on the line to serve and protect our country. So with that here is a general history of Veterans day along with its importance.
Veterans day has existed for over a hundred years, however it went by a different name then, originally the holiday was known as Armistice day which was a day of remembrance to the day World War 1 officially ended. Armistice was the ceasefire that was called seven months before World War 1 officially came to an end, that ceasefire was announced on November 11th, 1918. Along with this after World War 1 it became a day to honor the fallen and those who served for world war 1 specifically. This holiday didn’t become legally recognized however until may 13, 1938. This then became a day to celebrate and encourage world peace while still honoring those who served in world war 1.
In 1954 after World War 2 the day known as “Armistice day” was changed to Veterans day to honor all who fought in wars, served, perished and more, not just to honor those from world war 1 but to honor all who have served and fought for the country. In 1968 law was written in stating that Veterans day would change its date and land on the 4th monday of every october. However this did not go as expected and many were lost in confusion at the sudden change, and as a result many fought and exclaimed the importance of the original date. This is because the 11th of november was the day the ceasefire was called marking the specific date’s extreme importance in history. The government changed it back shortly after its original date and since then Veterans day has been celebrated every 11th on november. And so that is why it is important to show your support to the Veterans who have come before you and honor them for their sacrifice and commendable strength every 11th of November.
