April 21st was the day virginians would decide to approve or deny a temporary redistricting to secure a democrat advantage in 10 out of 11 house seats. The vote was incredibly close standing at 51% to 49%. The measure was approved by the general public in the vote, however a judge in southern virginia has claimed this measure does not follow the rules laid out by virginia’s own lawmakers. The Judge, one Jack Hurley is a Tazewell county judge, its rural area that would be impacted by these changes. Jack Hurley also called the ballot language put to voters “flagrantly misleading.”
Hurley barred any legislators from putting the map in play.
The state supreme court has already been over-viewing the measure thanks to a prior claim made by Hurley. The state attorney general Jay Jones, has stated he plans to have Hurley’s ruling appealed as soon as possible.
Andrea Gaines, a spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Elections, said state officials are aware of the ruling and “are in the process of reviewing its impact on the State Board Certification” of Tuesday’s results.
“Virginians For Fair Elections” was a group helping lead the campaign back to the referendum, said in a statement that:
“…voters understood exactly what was on the ballot, and they chose YES.”
“Republicans lost. Now they’re trying to overturn the will of the voters in court and trying to relitigate an election they couldn’t win.”
