You’ve probably heard the term “may the fourth be with you.” May the 4th is often heavily known as Star Wars Day, however the origins of this pun are quite unknown. The first recorded time that this joke was made, was in 1979 in a British Newspaper when Maragret Thatcher entered into office. This was around the time “Empire Strikes Back” was in production.
The next time was in the 1980s and 1990s when it started to make appearances in T.V. shows and commercials. One of the recorded incidents was in a show called “Count Duckula.” It also appeared in the 1994 Parliament Exchange in Britain.
In the 2000s, it began circulating around Facebook groups and being given the name Star Wars Day officially, however, it wasn’t until 2011, that an official convention was held on May the Fourth. This was held at the Toronto Underground Cinema in Canada.
When Disney acquired the Star Wars franchise in 2012, the holiday began official celebrations in 2013, with content on Disney’s part and in the Parks as well. Many had also begun called May the Fifth, as “Revenge of the Fifth” or “Revenge of The Sith” as such the holiday has become more and more popularized with social media!
