The Winter Sports season for Powhatan has officially begun and has been an ultimate success. The boys are currently 3-3 and on a two game winning streak with great wins against Monacan and George Wythe with scores of 61-59 and 69-47. Their first win of the season was against Patrick Henry with senior Daniel Jackson leading Powhatan in scoring against Patrick Henry with 22 points. Powhatan’s most recent win was against George Wythe with Matt Henderson leading the team in scoring with 18 points. The Girls Varsity basketball also had a statement win over George Wythe on December 12 winning 52-8. Along with an outstanding performance, Addie Delaney led Powhatan in scoring with 12 points. Both teams are showing vast improvements on the season and look forward to continuing their winning ways with their talented rosters.

The Wrestling season for Powhatan season is currently on a roll with wins against Hanover and Louisa. Powhatan Wrestling also recently had The Titan Invitational and they had an amazing performance as they placed second overall as a team and had six individual place winners. Gavin Utley, Luke Wells, Ian Mathuse, Talon, Harness, Brady Beard, and Brandon Campbell. Talon Harness also reached Powhatan wrestling history with 100 career varsity wins and will continue to make many more. Gavin, Talon, Luke, and Ian went undefeated in their matches and were champions within their group. Earlier in the season, other wrestlers Cal Johnson and Thomas Kimbrough placed high with great 3rd and 4th place performances at the Greg Stanley Invitational. This year’s wrestling team has been filled with amazing performances and impressive wins and will keep being a great success for Powhatan.

The swimming and indoor track season for Powhatan has started off very strong with school records being broken within the first couple of weeks. On December 5, the swim team competed in the Papa John’s Jumpstart Swim Meet at Monacan. Team captain Brandon Vallent broke the school record for the fastest 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:13:20. That performance placed him 9th overall in the competition with an outstanding accomplishment. In indoor track, Teddy Anderson placed 2nd in the Shot Put at the CNU Winter Frolic Indoor Invitational on December 9. He set a new school record for the shot put with the throw of 52’7” breaking the previous record by five. That throw qualified Teddy for the State Meet and he is having a fantastic season.
