Powhatan Girls Basketball

Powhatan Girls Basketball
NCAA

Winter sports are in full swing and the seasons are just beginning. At Powhatan High School, girls basketball is facing a season like no other.

With every sports season there are challenges, but for this team they are facing lots of difficulties early on. Throughout the past few years, we have seen many coaching changes for this team first with the loss of head coach Mrs. Henderson to this year a loss of a staff member Trevor and the newly head coach Mr. Washburn recently resigned passing on the head coach role. We also see a lack of upperclassmen on this team placing a huge role on the backs of the underclassmen.

This year, there is only one returning senior who early on suffered a hip injury and is out temporarily. With the low number of girls who tried out the JV team had a roster of 7, but within the first weeks into the preseason this team was cut due to low numbers.

For the girls basketball program here at Powhatan high school they now only carry one team which is varsity level which consists of a full roster. All those on the JV team were moved up to varsity while not all of them are getting minutes many of these Freshman are getting an understanding of a varsity level practice setting the future for this program.

It has been a rocky start to the season with a 1-5 record they are looking to turn some things around. In the first home game of the season against Cosby they faced a devastating loss 60-27, but following that they got their first win on the road against Patrick henry 58-26.

We see a number of different players hit the court for this team no matter the grade. Oftentimes we see some freshmen play over sophomores and even juniors. One freshman, Lauren Johnson has earned a starting spot on this team and shows promise for this team as well as two sophomore returners to varsity, Addison Delaney and Emily Gibbs both who earned minutes in the previous season as freshman on varsity. Emma Terry a junior also earning lots of minutes contributing to the scoring.

With a new team they must find a way to work together to clean up the rough patches. For this team fundamentals will be a big part of their success.

This team has faced an immense amount of diversity like no season before for this girls basketball program. Although off to a rocky start this team still has 16 games in the regular season hoping to find more wins.
