Rivalry Weekend

Rivalry+Weekend
Dave Adamson

With the end of Thanksgiving and Black Friday that can only mean the one thing the time many college football fans look forward to rivalry weekend. Two teams a rivalry and ultimately only one winner in the end.

On saturday November 25 many teams suited up for the game of the season to bring pride to their fans. Rivalries dating back to the very beginning. To many teams this game is what makes or breaks a season.

We see many matchups within the states such as Virginia versus Virginia Tech and Florida versus Florida State as well as some out of state matchups. Such as the matchup most highly anticipated also known as “The Game” Ohio state versus Michigan both teams 11-0 going into this game.

In the commonwealth clash of Virginia and Virginia Tech only one team left happy Virginia tech swept the floor or in other words field with the 3-8 Virginia cavaliers to win 55-17. Fifth ranked Florida State also takes the crown for the state of Florida winning 24-15 to the Florida gators. Number 8 Alabama took on Auburn with a 6-6 record winning 27-24 in the final minutes of the game with a touchdown pass to win the game.

Ohio versus Michigan was one of the most highly anticipated games of the weekend number 2 ranked Ohio took on 3rd ranked Michigan in what is known to be “the game.” These two teams first met in 1897 and since then the tradition continues these two teams meet head to head each year. Leading up to this game Michigan leads the number of wins in previous matchups with 61 wins and 52 loses in addition 6 ties.

Throughout this gameĀ  the two teams were neck and neck going into halftime the score was 10 to 14 with Michigan leading the board. By the third quarter it was tied 17-17 not for long though shortly after Michigan regained control with another touchdown. With 1:05 left in the game Michigan kicks a field goal bringing their lead 30-24. Ohio state still has a chance though a touchdown can win the game for them. At this point they are without their starting quarterback, but they make their way down the field giving Ohio fans hope this ended though when in the final seconds of the game the ball was intercepted giving Michigan the win 30-24.

As the clock hit zero the cheers and celebrations began for some at least not as much for others. Michigan fans stormed the field a whole blob of yellow and blue filled the field in celebration of this win.

Ohio state lead in total passing yards with 271 compared to Michigan’s 182 on the other hand Michigan led in rushing yards 156 to 107. With this win Michigan has clinched the big ten east to advance to the big ten championship game and a big talk in the college playoffs.

As the seasons for many of these teams come to an end some teams journey continue in hopes of winning the college football playoffs or their bowl games. We look to see the ranks of teams in following weeks with Georgia most likely securing the number one seed with Michigan not far behind at 2. Also some curveballs with Liberty possibly being part of the conversation gaining themselves a seed in the college football playoffs.
