We have officially reached the halfway point of the 2022-2023 Powhatan Indians Baseball season. With a record of 6 – 4 the team is putting themselves in a prime spot for the regional playoffs. The first half of the season has been filled with many winning and losing streaks for the Indians. With 10 more games ahead, they are hoping to reach the 14 win mark and to secure a spot in the playoffs.

The team started off the season with 3 straight wins against Manchester, Patrick Henry, and Varina, powered by dominant pitching from Matthew Layman and Conner Hedgepeth. They pitched a combined 19 out of 21 innings through the first three games. On the offensive side, William Tuttle, Ethan Sargent, and William Karanian all had multiple hits throughout this first stretch of the season.

The Indians lost 2 games against Midlothian and James River. Multiple errors and poor hitting plagued them through this stretch.

The team then collected 3 wins against Monacan, Clover Hill, and L.C. Bird. The team played clean baseball with few mistakes throughout this period with timely hits from all their hitters including Andrew Shiflett and Luke Burkhart.

The next week the team dropped 2 straight against Cosby and Manchester. Lack of energy and no hitting contributed to these losses. Now with a record of 6-4, the team looks to learn from its mistakes and bounce back in the second half of the season which starts off with 2 winnable games against George Wythe and Midlothian this week.
