Combating Sexism One Word at a Time

Combating Sexism One Word at a Time

Emily McManus

“Feminism” a term that elicits intense feelings. Its goals are often misinterpreted. Feminism simply means promoting equality for the sexes. Feminism does not mean that women are better and it does not promote the idea that men are bad.

The promotion of equality for men and women should not be a debate, it should be a given. Not only does feminism promote equality in pay and in the workplace, but in ways that are much more personal as well.

If you don’t think that there is an issue with the community you live in regarding equality, think about the things in the world around you. Feminism is crucial because in certain parts of the world a women can be arrested if a man assaults her. A woman in Iran named Mahsa Amini died in the custody of police for accidentally showing a few locks of her hair. These issues are relevant especially in Iran and these women are screaming to be heard.

Price difference on a product meant “for women” vs. a product meant ” for men” even though it is the same thing.

If you are looking for examples of the difference in your own community, look at price tags. Though it may be a small difference, typically products for women, like razors, deodorant, etc., tend to cost more. This is called the pink tax. The pink tax is not a real tax, but added on money to items that are intended for women. For example, an item that is pink may cost a dollar more then the same item with the same purpose that is blue. Not only does the pink tax show up in hygiene products, but toys as well. On the topic of pricing differences, feminine care items are a topic to discuss. Think about it like toilet paper, in any public bathroom you have access to free toilet paper. However, you have to pay for feminine care products that are an essential item but considered as a luxury item. If you are using a public restroom, feminine care products should be provided, free of cost.

Feminism supports equality and has been fighting for it for a long time. Feminism is not meant to divide the sexes but support equality between them.
