October is known to be National Bullying Prevention Month. It’s a period of time to raise awareness and educate the public on bullying. Bullying has a devastating effect on children and families, such as loss of self-esteem, avoidance, increased anxiety, and even depression. Rather than just mutual teasing or fighting, bullying is the repeated intention of hurting someone verbally or physically. Bullying doesn’t just affect the person being bullied; it also has an impact on the family and the people surrounding that person. Unfortunately, bullying is a never-ending issue, and it leads to horrible outcomes such as mental health problems, anxiety, substance use, and even suicide. October was first declared as National Bullying Prevention Month in 2006. From that point, October has been a time to acknowledge, raise awareness, and educate the public. Even though bullying is an endless worldwide issue, there are many ways you can help prevent bullying. At the beginning of October, on the third or fourth Wednesday, Unity Day is held. To participate, most schools, businesses, and public organizations wear orange to represent kindness.
