Morgan’s Message is a nonprofit organization that was founded to recognize the story of Morgan Rodgers, a student-athlete who was recruited to play Division I Women’s Lacrosse. Morgan had a goal to reach the highest level in her sport. In 2014, Morgan’s dream to play for Duke University’s women’s lacrosse team came true. Following her acceptance to Duke, Morgan experienced challenges and high levels of anxiety. In January of 2017, Morgan suffered a life-shattering knee injury. Morgan went through surgery and rehabilitation to try to get back to her best self. During this time, she went through a mental decline, struggling with her self-worth, self-esteem, and not feeling in control of her life. Morgan received help from professionals and had the support of friends and family, but even still Morgan suffered alone in silence, and on July 11, 2019, at the age of 22, Morgan took her own life.
Although Morgan’s life was cut short, that didn’t mean her story was over. Morgan’s family began a nonprofit organization to share her story with others and raise awareness. Morgan’s story has been heard on many podcasts, news channels, and Powhatan High School even offers a club dedicated to Morgan’s Message. Morgan’s Message stresses that as an athlete, there is no judgment in reaching out for help.
