Bird flu is a viral infection that mainly affects birds, but it can affect humans and be very deadly. Bird flu causes respiratory problems, neurologic issues, and increased stool frequency. It is passed through bird salvia, feces, and mucus. There are about 70 cases in the US currently this year and 1 known death. There are no known cases in Virginia.
Brazil is known for being a huge chicken exporter throughout the world, and chickens may be carriers of bird flu. As a result of handling birds, such as chickens, they may be more exposed to the bird flu. Brazil has confirmed an outbreak of bird flu and has stopped global trade of chickens due to this outbreak. So, if you plan on visiting Brazil anytime soon, I would rethink, and maybe choose a more local trip.
