Hertzler Farm and Feed, a family owned business that has been around for decades here in Powhatan, Virginia and loved by farmers in the area, is a humble and positive farmers market. The beloved store is a place where farmers and animal keepers could go and get supplies and commune with other farmers. Being open for almost half a century (42 years) Hertzler Farm and Feed is a pretty structured family run business with good people to back it up.
Saturday , April 12 2025, tragedy struck on the main building of Hertzler Farm and Feed. At around 7 p.m. on that Saturday, fire trucks were rushed to the farm as the building was set ablaze for an unknown reason. The Fire lasted several hours, even requiring the firemen to get more water as they ran out multiple times, having multiple fire departments from neighboring areas such as Goochland, Amelia, and Chesterfield.
The store was sadly in shambles after the fire. In addition to losing the store, they also lost parakeets and a couple of chicks. Luckily, they were able to evacuate the barnyard and bunny room in time before the fire could reach them, and the fire did not get close to their cattle.
This is a very heartbreaking loss for Powhatan and the farming community, but the community refuses to give up as they show their support online and through donations asking how they can help the owners get back on their feet. The store owners had this to say to the public, “There is still so much to do,” the store said. “We are living day by day and doing what we can to prepare for the coming weeks and months.”
As the business continues to battle hardships in the next coming months, all we can do as a community is show endless love and support to Hertzler Farm and Feed in hopes to rebuild the store once again.
