The famous Jet Set Nightclub in Santo Domingo had a tragic roof collapse on April 9. It collapsed around 1 a.m. with about 300 people inside. Artist Rubby Perez was performing with his orchestra. His body was found on April 10, along with 112 other bodies found in the rubble. Of the 113 people found, 33 of the bodies are still unidentified. Former MLB players Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco were among the victims killed in the accident.155 people were taken alive from the rubble and are being hospitalized for injuries.
Families of the victims in the accident have placed pictures of their loved ones at the nightclub as a memorial to the missing. The search is ongoing and the Emergency Operations Center has received a lot of help from the public. Personnel from 22 public institutions have assisted so far with response efforts. Luis Abinader, president of the Dominican Republic, has declared three days of mourning after the disaster. He and his wife traveled to the nightclub on Tuesday morning in order to express their condolences to those who lost loved ones in the accident.
Officials say it is too early to tell why the roof fell, but it was likely a structural issue that goes back to the construction of the building. The Dominican Republic does not have strict rules on public inspections, so there is no record of the building ever passing an inspection. Firefighters have used the broken blocks of concrete to lift planks and create passageways to find the final survivors stuck under debris. After the rescue effort comes to a close, officials will begin clearing the mass debris, as more fallen victims are expected to be discovered during cleanup.
