President Trump has signed a new executive order that requires proof of citizenship in order to vote in federal elections. Valid proof of citizenship includes a U.S. passport, a REAL ID, military ID, or other federally issued-identification.
Without proof of citizenship, people will not be able to cast their votes on election day. According to the order, mailed in votes will no longer be counted after election day, either.
This order has been met with both positive and negative reactions. Some argue that this order will finally crack down on illegal immigrants and help free our elections from fraud, while others argue that this order will wrongly prohibit tens of millions of people from voting.
President Trump has declared that the U.S. has failed “to enforce basic and necessary election protections.” Trump proceeded to state that “Free, fair, and honest elections unmarred by fraud, errors, or suspicion are fundamental to maintaining our constitutional Republic.”
His goal is to eliminate as much fraud as possible from our federal election process in order to ensure a fair election. Trump was especially excited about this order and stated “It’s an honor to sign this one. I sign all of them, but to sign this one is a great honor.”
