
For over 650,000 years Santorini has experienced volcanic and seismic activity. As of January 25, 2025 the location started experiencing a sharp increase with over 1,200 earthquakes in the span of 12 days alone.
The magnitude of the earthquakes have been ranging from 1.00 up to the high of 5.2 with at least 129 earthquakes having a 4.00 magnitude or greater.
By February 6 around 11,000 had chosen to leave Santorini using ferry’s to evacuate 7,000 people. The mass amount of people choosing to leave led to Greece declaring a state of emergency in Santorini, which lasted until March 3.
After March 3 the swarm would start to gradually die down, with the current earthquakes reaching a 3.00 magnitude. After these hundreds of earthquakes Santorini is preparing for the upcoming tourist season.
