Welcome back, this is number two in my series on transgender students here in America and in Powhatan VA. Some things have changed multiple times during the creation of this article due to the new presidential administration. This article will be seeing how trans students are treated nationwide versus, right here.
Before recent changes, federal law as of November 2024, a transgender student was entitled to sports, bathrooms, and locker rooms that align with their gender identity. However, recent changes as Donald Trump’s administration is trying to shoot down title 9 from the Biden administration.
If this were shot down, students would be allowed to be discriminated against on the basis of gender, freely. The local district would be able to decide upon whether or not a transgender child would be permitted to use the bathroom based on their identity. According to the Trump administration, this action would protect cisgender women from predatory people (which has been proven false), and also the title 9 document claims that Transgender people exist which directly acts against what the government has made official.
According to the US government, “It is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female. These sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality.” This is directly contradicted by actual biological science actually, there will maybe be an article on that specifically in the near future.
Across the United states transgender students are treated very differently, on average the more blue the state, the more accepting the schools are. Compared to the schools in Powhatan, we are very far behind. As shown in the prior article, here in Powhatan everything must be approved by families. However, in states like California, transgender students are able to participate in sports, use bathrooms, and have their own chosen names used without parental permission. It’s a place we as the people of Powhatan should try to reach. So we may be more equal for everyone.
