With fall sports finally coming to an end winter sports are getting started. Here at Powhatan winter sports include indoor track, wrestling, and basketball.
The Powhatan girls basketball team is looking to have a great season. The varsity girls are coached by new Head coach Greg Willis and assisted by Libbie Smith and Rachel Derrer.
In the 23-24 winter season these girls faced some rough games. They ended the season 6-18 after facing many challenges throughout the season including losing coaching staff, cutting the JV team, and having only one returning senior who could not play due to injury. With this being said this team looks to turn things around this season with more wins.
Though they just had tryouts on November 11- 13, the preparation for this season started way prior. These girls have been in and out of the gym since June with summer workouts. These also took place throughout the start of school after the school day every week leading up to tryouts. They also took part in a summer league giving them a chance to compete against other schools and practice their game skills.
This team consists of one Freshmen, Libby Gibbs, two sophomores, including Lauren Johnson who saw starting time as well as lots of minutes as a freshman last year, five juniors, and four seniors. The seniors this year include the new additions of Chloe James and Erica Krauss and returners Emma Terry and Adrianna Flippen. The team has three captains, Junior Addison Delaney along with seniors Emma Terry and Adrianna Flippen.
The first scrimmage took place on 11/18 away against hermitage. This game ended in a win for Powhatan winning 67-24. Senior Emma Terry lead the scoring with 16 points. This scrimmage was a great start to the season, and they hope to see more like it. The first regular season game will take place on 11/21 against Louisa at home.
These girls have put in so much work during the off season and hope to see a positive result. Best of Luck with your season!
